How to Make a Chai Latte at Home
Recently, one of our wholesale customers got in touch to ask about our chai tea: "How can we make this a chai latte?" They asked. So, we took to our blog to direct them to a recipe and...nothing. How have we not yet written a blog about making chai lattes?!
So, here is a long-awaited Char-approved guide to making delicious, spicy Classic Chai lattes at home! Thank you for the inspiration, Jon at Newlyns. I am keeping measurements per cup so that you can easily scale it up when you get asked to make more!
Ingredients:
Classic Chai x1 dessert spoon (or one teabag) per cup
Water 50ml
Milk of choice 200ml per cup (I find it is lovely with oat milk)
Brown sugar or honey x1 teaspoon per cup (or more if you have a sweet tooth!)
Fresh ginger (optional)
A pinch of cinnamon
Equipment:
A strainer (only needed if using loose-leaf tea)
A saucepan
A wooden spoon
Your favourite cup
Method:
Put your dry saucepan on a high heat, and once it is warmed, add the chai tea and stir to avoid burning. This will allow the spices to open up a little, but only do this for a short time (about 40 seconds-1 minute).
Add the water and bring to a boil over a medium heat.
Reduce the heat to medium-low and add your milk of choice to the saucepan. Add your sugar or honey and stir until the milk begins to evaporate, then reduce the heat further and allow this to simmer for a few minutes. Avoid stirring at this point, and if you like a spicier chai this is when to add a small amount of fresh ginger to the saucepan. If a film begins to form, remove it prior to serving.
Strain into your favourite cup. At this point, you may choose to froth some of the milk after straining, add whipped cream on top, or simply add a pinch of cinnamon. Alternatively, you may want to pop it in the fridge for 15 minutes and serve over ice for a comforting iced chai latte. If you like a bit more caffeine, you can make this a dirty chai by adding a shot of espresso. However you prefer your chai, it is best when shared.
We hope that you enjoy many cups of Classic Chai, and experiment until you find your favourite way of making it. We love hearing your adaptations and how you are enjoying Char teas, so please get in touch and let us know!
Happy sipping!
